saturday night love… the statement clutch

accessories, fashion

I am dying to freshen up my handbag assortment at the moment… taking inspiration from some of these amazing clutches that totally transform an outfit. I am also warming up to the idea of using a bright over-sized purse during the day (instead of lugging a huge bag around)! Thoughts?

love of the day – embellished sneakers

fashion, love of the day, shoes

I love sneakers and I think they have been an awesome trend… my feet are grateful to have had a breather from heels for the season. For Spring, wedge sneakers are stepping aside in favor of studded, embellished sneakers. Here are a few of my favorites:

love of the day – the maxi dress + leather combo

fashion, love of the day

My love of leather jackets is well documented (check here), and I am really into the combination of a cropped leather over a long, glam maxi skirt or dress. It’s a great contrast. I also love that it hints at it being Spring at some point in the near future (hurry up already!)

love of the day: the fur

fashion, love of the day

Nothing screams luxury (and warmth) quite like a beautiful fur. I think that everyone needs at least one gorgeous fur in their closet. I look forward to going back to the East Coast especially so I can wear my furs (as they tend to be way too heavy and garner lots of odd looks here in LA).

Ready to make a purchase? There are two cruelty-free options: vintage for faux.

When purchasing a vintage fur, it’s worth the money to buy it from a reputable vintage shop, who has (hopefully) sifted out any furs that are not in good condition. You should still be looking for fit (I find that often they are way too big and bulky through the shoulders), signs of rot or decay (it should feel supple when you bend the material, not brittle), and you should make sure it is free of tears, rips and shedding.

Faux furs are amazing, and you are able to find a great quality much more easily than an actual vintage fur. My recommendation here is to stick with a neutral color, as the brighter costumes look more fake and can even go towards costumey. Current favorites for faux are BSABLE (sold at Dash, Revolve Clothing, and Elyse Walker), and Rachel Zoe (Neiman Marcus, Piperlime, and Nordstrom).

Love of the day: the feather skirt

fashion, love of the day

I am loving feather skirts for Holiday. It almost makes sense to wear them in December (in a way you just can’t justify in say, the middle of summer).

To keep the skirt looking chic and not too costume like, consider the following:

-Shoes should be simple (but tall!). A sleek heel or even a simple black bootie is perfect. You can’t do a statement shoe with this skirt!

-Pair it with a tee, tank, or even a sweatshirt to give it more of an ever-day look. I love how cute a simple grey sweatshirt is tucked in. A striped tee could be really cute too!

-If the skirt is looking too drastic, consider pairing with a blazer, fitted field jacket, or a leather over it

-For nighttime, keep it simple with a plain blouse or top, maybe a statement necklace? A leather blouse or tank could add an interesting contrast in texture. I love the idea of a bold or ornate belt around the waist to define the skirt also!

-Ostrich feathers are super light and fluffy feathers, and are much easier to work with than other types of feathers that are more defined (and could look too bird-like)

brand crush: equipment

brand crush, fashion, love of the day

Equipment is a French brand that was originally introduced  in 1976 by Christian Restoin in Paris, inspired by the likes of Audrey Hepburn and Lauren Bacall. The idea was to take a piece of menswear, interpret it for the modern woman, and make it both soft and sexy. It was the first brand to really introduce menswear as womenswear.

After about 20 years, the brand tapered off as the owner went off to pursue other interests, only to be recently revived in 2010 by the same creative forces that are behind Joie and Current / Elliott. Equipment once again is a staple in every woman’s wardrobe (or should be), offering up the benchmark for the staple white blouse, and offering hundreds of variations in colors and fabrications.

If you don’t have one of these in your closet, you need to add one in immediately! My favorite style is the “Bret”, which has a single front pocket. I find this to be more feminine than some of their other styles.

love of the day: the phillip lim 31 hour bag

fashion, love of the day

This bag personifies simplicity as beauty at its best, as Phillip Lim does so well. This beautiful leather bag is meant to carry you throughout your day and then some, holding your entire life in one chic bag.

Originally introduced in solids, the colorblocks are fun because the zip top can be flipped back and forth- black on tan one day, and tan on black the next. My color crush? Navy, which I think will be awesome against neutrals and brighter colors going into Spring.

the screen tee makes a come back

fashion, love of the day

The screen tee has made a come-back, made possible by the statement necklace. Much more chic and understated, the graphic statement and logo tee is once again being put under blazers, tucked into skirts, and layered under luxurious furs and leathers.

Not for the lazy, you are going to need some serious jewelry and beautiful shoes to carry this off without looking like a grad student.

how to buy the perfect leather jacket

fashion, love of the day

I am somewhat of a leather jacket connoisseur, finding my collection over a dozen deep and always searching for the next amazing and can’t live without piece. I have been shopping for a new biker / motorcycle style in black for a while, and was disappointed when I brought the winning jacket home, and felt that it was too heavy, awkward and unflattering. I gave it another spin and tried to wear it to work, and took it off seconds after I was at my desk. I couldn’t move my arms or type comfortably, I felt very restrained (and that I looked like a boy).

(rika “nova” black and red leather jacket)

Here are some shopping tips to make sure you bring home the right jacket:

Is it too boxy? I find jackets to be the most flattering when they nip in a bit at the waist, instead of just hanging straight. This keeps them feminine, and more versatile, since now it is something you can throw over a pretty dress. Make sure the shoulders hit right at your shoulders, and not below. Because of the construction of the jacket, this will just cause your shoulders to look massive. Do you have just a little bit of room in the arms? I am usually not wearing heavy layers under my leathers, just a tee or lightweight knit piece, so I prefer the arms to be more fitted. Regarding sleeve length, often the sleeves are too short for me. I am obsessed with Zara leathers, but every time I try one on, the sleeves in the size that fit properly end up being about an inch too short. I do like sleeves that have a zipper detail. Any excuse for hardware is a good one, and I like the idea of unzipping and rolling up a sleeve to expose some arm candy.

Are the zippers sturdy? How is the stitching? If you fall in love with your jacket and have need a seam or zipper repaired, it is going to be extremely expensive.  Look at the lining- is it a higher quality material?

Do you have a strong tendancy towards gold or silver? Just like with a handbag, this should be taken into consideration, especially if it is a lot of hardware. Do you want studs, spikes or other embellishments? If you already have a few leathers, this might be fun, otherwise if you need an everyday pieces you are going to find yourself limited in what you can pair it with. Also consider if it has an attached belt that closes at the waist. This can be a cute detail, but since a leather jacket is more casual and you will likely be wearing it open most of the time, this could result in an awkward piece of hardware just dangling from your waist.

How much money are you willing to invest? My favorite  designers who always offer perfect leathers are Balmain, Celine, Iro, Balenciaga and Rick Owens. For options under a thousand, look at Veda, Doma, Zara, All Saints, Theory and Joie.
